The 40th annual American
Music Awards kicked off last Sunday with a star studded red carpet that was
surprisingly subdued. Although I’ll admit I was disappointed with the lack of
jaw dropping meat dresses, I was thrilled to see that celebs are embracing sequins,
sparkles and slits this season. As always, the AMAS red carpet was full of
fashion highs and lows. Lets take a look at some of the good, bad and
questionable ensembles donned by celebs at last week’s show.
TAYLOR SWIFT
Taylor Swift stunned Sunday night
in a short but sweet Zuhair Murad mini dress. This ultra short embroidered
sheath with gold beadwork complemented Ms. Swift’s curves and showed off her best
asset: those killer legs! Swift coordinated this sexy look with strappy Jimmy
Choo Sandals, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and a simple but classic updo. This was
by far one of my favorite looks of the night! Taylor’s simple styling works
well with her outfit and doesn’t take away from the ornate beading of the
dress. Additionally, this mini is just the right amount of sexy without heading
into skanky-ville.
HEIDI KLUM
Heidi Klum showed off her supermodel legs in a golden Alexander Vauthier mini dress. Klum accessorized this gilded number with matching Christian Louboutin pumps and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Although I love the poof cap sleeves and chin grazing neckline, I think the high cut hip slit is a bit much considering this dress is short enough as it is. Also, is it just me or does the embroidery on this dress resemble a cup of ramen noodles? Although this isn't my favorite look of the night, Heidi Klum still looks stunning as always.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD
Carrie has donned some pretty fabulous fashion lately and the AMAS was no exception. Ms. Underwood sparkled on Sunday in an ornately beaded Abed Mahfouz gown. The unexpected electric purple hue was a fashion risk that truly paid off. Carrie accessorized this look with a Jill Milan Clutch and rose gold Jacob & Co. chandelier earrings. Although I agree that simple styling was the way to go as this gown is loud enough as it is, I would have chosen a different hair style for Carrie. The high neckline coupled with Carrie's long goldy locks causes her to get lost in this look. I think an updo would have been a better choice that would have allowed Carrie to shine as brightly as her gown.
NICKI MINAJ
Although I was relieved not to see Nicki in a hideous get-up covered in zebra skin and lollipops, I still found this look to be a fashion fail. The bright lime green hue of this Monique Lhuillier gown, coupled with her over the top platinum blonde curls and bubble gum pink lipstick, makes her appear very clownish. On top that, Nicki accessorizes with large Charles Albert gems and jewels which makes the whole look very gaudy. But besides her poor styling choices, this look has already been done! Paula Patton sported this same strapless chartreuse at the Golden Globes as did Julie Bowen at the Emmys. Nicki should have followed Julie's lead and styled this look very simply as to not take away from the beauty of this gown. Regardless of who wore it best (JULIE!!!), it's really time hollywood retired this dress.
JORDIN SPARKS
The fact that I've seen this look on more than one best dressed list is disturbing to me. I understand that revealing mesh insets are in trend right now, but in this case, there are just too many cut outs. But that's just the tip of the iceberg! The patchwork print of this floor length Etro gown is tacky and tasteless. It looks like Sparks was trying to pull off something avant-garde but instead she just looks like a patchwork picnic blanket.
Christina Aguilera
Oh Christina, when will you learn! If you ever wondered what a blonde Cleopatra would look like, I'd imagine this would be pretty close. I don't know whats worse; the platinum blonde wig or this lavender ombre gown. I don't think this dress would be such a fashion faux pas if the top didn't fit so awkwardly. Additionally, I think this dress would have worked better on a spring or summer red carpet instead of an awards show in mid November. Xtina accessorizes her Pamela Roland silk chiffon halter with Neil Lane jewels, sparkling clutch and blinged out heels.
